The Turkish Passion

Original title: La pasión turca
Synopsis:

Intense and heart-trending romantic drama told in Antonio Gala’s poetic style.

Desideria Oliván, a young, unhappily married woman from a small town in the North of Spain, discovers consuming passion when, on a tourist trip to Turkey, she falls into Yamam’s arms.

Although she knows nothing of him, she abandons everything to go and live with him in Istanbul. Time goes by, and the intensity of their love endures, although their relations become increasingly dramatic and sordid, until Desideria meets and old friend of hers who works for Interpol and reveals the true nature of Yamam’s business activities.

The story, admirably told through the protagonist’s supposedly intimate notebooks, is a bitter meditation on a love affair carried to its logical conclusion of physical and moral destruction, in the midst of a troubled climate – elements which Antonio Gala eloquently depicts with the irresistible force of his style.

“Making someone happy is perhaps the humblest way of approaching happiness.” Antonio Gala

“Happiness is realizing that nothing is too important.” Antonio Gala

“Love is the poetry of our feelings. But there are some horrible poems.” Antonio Gala
